II’m Mike Johnson, founder of Ground Level.

Ground Level was built on a simple belief:

Some of the best lessons about leadership don’t come from a boardroom. They come from the people closest to the work.

I started cutting lawns when I was twelve years old.

Since then, my career has taken me from working with my hands in the field to leading people, developing teams, building customer relationships, driving sales and business development, and helping grow organizations.

My titles and responsibilities have changed over the years, but I’ve never forgotten where I came from.

And I think that matters.

I believe leadership is about people before positions.

I believe the person doing the work deserves to understand not only where the company is going, but where they can go with it.

I believe trust is earned through presence, consistency, accountability and doing what you say you’re going to do.

And I believe some of the greatest leadership lessons come from simply listening to the people with dirt on their boots and calluses on their hands.

I’ve made mistakes.

I’ve had successes.

I’ve worked for great leaders and learned from difficult ones.

I’ve watched people grow when someone believed in them, and I’ve seen what happens when good people stop feeling seen.

I’ve also spent enough time with customers to understand that the employee experience and the client experience aren't separate worlds.

They meet at the point where the work gets done.

The people closest to the work are often the people closest to the customer. They turn promises into experiences. They build trust. They protect relationships. And every day, in ways big and small, they help shape the reputation of the company they represent.

Those experiences are what eventually became Ground Level.

This isn’t about pretending I have leadership figured out.

I don’t.

It’s about sharing what I’ve learned, continuing to learn from others, and creating honest conversations about people, leadership, culture, customers, business and growth.

Because after a lifetime in and around field-based businesses, I’ve become convinced of something:

When we build stronger people, we build stronger businesses.

And when strong people understand the value of the work they do, they create better experiences for the people trusting us to do it.

That’s Ground Level.
